MCP, the New API for AI Agents
Anthropic introduced the Model Context Protocol (MCP) as an open standard for AI models to interact with external tools and data sources (https://www.anthropic.com/news/model-context-protocol).
MCP is gaining traction with the support of Anthropic, OpenAI, Microsoft, and AWS. OpenAI has integrated MCP into their Agents SDK, Microsoft supports MCP in Copilot Studio, and AWS extends the Amazon Q Developer CLI with MCP support.
Similar to Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), MCP allows systems to communicate and interoperate with each other. Using MCP, developers can expose their data via MCP servers and build AI applications (MCP clients) that interact with these servers, principally designed for AI agents.
Interoperability among software applications that we have become used to before will be possible within agentic systems. These interfaces will continue to be extended until only natural language may be required among agents to communicate, share data, and invoke tools (NLI, Natural Language Interfaces, similar to how humans interact, depending on the use case implemented).
